The Art of Ray Chase

Less than a year ago, I discovered the artwork of Raymond Chase online and have been a huge fan of his art and illustration ever since. His style is colorful and dark and whimsical and unique.
One of the first illustrations of Ray's I saw was a piece called Drown:

It's a fantastic painting and I fell in love with it immediately.
Recently, I asked Ray if it would be OK for me to digitally recreate Drown using my digital art technique. He said yes and I went to work.

I did a side-by-side recreation using photographic sources and manipulation in Photoshop:

Staring at Ray's Drown for hours while creating a digital version of it gave me a new amazement of his illustration. Drown is colorful and dark and happy and sad and moody and deep.

I don't think my recreation hit all of those qualities but it was fun to recreate and to pay homage to my favorite artist.

Remember this guy?:
He recently became a clay miniature thanks to the work of
Raymond Chase and myself (by 'myself' I mean Ray).

Forged from a coat hanger, Super Sculpey, and a lot of love, this little pumpkid was fun to make.

He was so cute we just wanted to bake him in the oven. So we did (Sculpey needs oven time to harden).
All he needed was some priming and some drying time and then he was ready for painting.

The next step was to give him his eyes. These were tiny balls of Sculpey and were detailed by Ray. We dripped some clear enamel onto them to give them a wet look.

The final step was to coat his pumpkin head with satin finish varnish for that healthy-pumpkin look.

This guy was born as a doodle during a disgusting 2-hour long business meeting.
I gave him a facelift and now he's on a t-shirt. "Flip off the world."

cat on a terlit

I have a cat. I have a large dark Siamese/Balinese cat. He's big and dumb but has a heart of gold. I love him like a son. A son that can't speak or do the dishes or clean up around the house.

When he pees in his litter box, he doesn't bother to sit down. He stands in his litter box and pees out of it. When he's done, he looks annoyed that he has to pull half of the litter out of the box and onto the floor in order to cover his mess.

Years ago, I saw a show about a guy who trained his cat to use the toilet. I think the show was "That's Amazing!" or "Real People" but I'm not sure. I remember thinking, "So, wait a minute, there'd possibly be a time where I'm rushing to the bathroom and I'd have to wait for my cat to finish up in there?"

I imagine training my cat to use the toilet.
